Poha or flat rice flakes breakfast dish is a gluten free breakfast/brunch made from flattened rice. This carb heavy breakfast paired with boiled eggs makes a hearty meal. The origins  of this dish is in central India, hence its  popular name Kanda Poha in Marathi( a language spoken in Mumbai and Maharastra) means  flat rice flakes recipe with lots of onion. Batatta Poha is a dish with the addition of potatoes to the same recipe. I loved eating this growing up for breakfast or as an after school snack, and now my kids equally like it when I put lot more peanuts in the recipe;)

Ingredients

4 cups Poha/flattened Rice (thick)
3 tblsp –Oil
½ tsp mustard seeds
3 dry red chili peppers
4 tblsp peanuts
1 onion( large) chopped
10 curry leaves
2- jalapenos, seeded, chopped
2 tbsp- Cilantro, chopped
1 tsp – turmeric
1 tsp salt or to taste
1 tblsp -Lime juice

Instructions

  • The most important part of this recipe is to check if this Poha is thick or thin when buying in the grocery store, if the Poha is thin, it practically disintegrates to pulp in the making process, hence always pick thick Poha for this recipe.
  • Chop the onion, peppers, and cilantro and keep ready for the cooking process.
  • Measure the 4 cups poha/flat rice into the colander and wash in running tap water and set aside. This should be done just before seasoning process to avoid it from getting soggy.
  • In a wok or pot add oil and when it’s warm add the seasonings of mustard seeds and dry red chili peppers. When the mustard starts to splutter, add peanuts, and sauté. Next add the chopped onion, jalapenos and curry leaves. Sauté this till its soft and translucent.
Add salt, and turmeric to the onions , followed by the washed poha/ flat rice flakes.
  • Gently toss around with our stirring a lot and cook together on slow flame for few minutes. Too much stirring can make the Poha mushy.
Add lemon juice and cilantro and serve.
  • This above recipe can be followed with an addition of diced potatoes in the cooking process to make Battata Poha.
