Home slice is considered an Austin iconic restaurant even though it started not many years ago in 2004. And surprisingly this in one iconic place we hadn’t eaten till this past long weekend. Located in a prime spot in hip SoCo of Austin, Home Slice offers authentic New York Style Pizza.
South Congress is a happening area in Austin. The popular saying’ Keep Austin Weird’ is perfect for SoCo, which is a great place to catch a slice of eclectic and funky. While strolling down SoCo we saw the popular ‘I love you so much’ green graffiti wall with people posing for pics, of course the crazy long lines at our favorite Hopdoddys Burgers, hipster crowds in front of Home Slice, the elegant outdoor eating at Perlas, the fun and eclectic stores and their eye-catching window dressings… and when we browsed around in Allens boots store , where we have got many a visitor for Texas shopping experience, today saw a bikini clad girl trying out boots! SoCo hence never has a dull moment 😉
Home Slice Pizza had a waiting time as we expected. Since our friends were running late, we checked in our name and sat on the outdoor tables in front of the restaurant. There are few high tables and stools out for waiting folks to enjoy a drink or even order some antipasti/appetizers. To keep things cool, there is a pleasant mist in the covered patio. For those in a hurry, yet want to eat a good pizza, ‘More Home Slice’ right next door caters in for park and pick up, curbside eating, and eat as you walk people.
While waiting outside our friends arrived and so did the appetizer we ordered. The garlic knots with marinara sauce was fresh and delicious. Soon seated in the large booths in the dining area inside with our friends,we ordered our pizzas. Home Slice offers New York style pizza with a crisp thin crust and interesting toppings. We could make our own custom pizza pie or order the ‘tried and true’ pre-build pies. Since the ‘tried and true’ pies offered looked pretty interesting we ordered the spinach, red peppers, green olives and onions pizza and a white pie with spinach. Though Home Slice also offers their new Sicilian pizzas, we couldn’t try it out since we were told they were only available with pepperoni topping, which we don’t eat.
The ambiance is relaxed and cozy, with dim lights, and loud noise level with bustling conversations . It fits fine for all types of crowds and perfect for groups like us with kids and toddlers too. While waiting, our waiter got a piece of dough for the toddler in our group to play with. The dough was so fun, the tweens, teens and adults dug in their fingers to play. My tween got creative and made the Home Slice dough boy cat!
The spinach, red peppers, green olives and onions pizza was very scrumptious and tasty and couldn’t have been better flavored on this nice crispy pizza crust. The white pie had mild flavors with a lot of varieties of cheese and was interesting too.
Delicious pizza, conversations & friends @ SoCo, Austin. It was a fun evening.
Lastly will have to say, when I came to know Home Slice co-owner Jen Scoville Strickland used to be a food writer and editor and combined her passion for food and experience to inspire Homeslice pizza, it’s no wonder she got it right. She may be her best critic! ( Homeslice is co-owned by Jen Scoville Strickland, Joseph Strickland and Terri Hannifin)
