Bisi bele bhaath is a rice, lentils and vegetables based one -dish casserole with its origins in south India in the state of Karnataka. Bisi-bele-bhaath is also known as Bisi bele huliyanna ( Kannada language: ಬಿಸಿ ಬೇಳೆ ಹುಳಿ ಅನ್ನ), which means “hot lentil sour rice”. The traditional preparation of this dish is quite elaborate but overtime the ‘Kannadigas’ like my friend Hema Rao have figured the tricks of making this recipe in a short cut process.
I attempted this recipe today and it came out very delicious, but realize I haven’t mastered the art of making the perfect Bisi Bele Bhaat yet which I had eaten many years ago. When I master the craft of this recipe, I will do my Bangalore side of the family and my ‘Kannadiga’ friends happy;)
This dish is a perfect mix of carbohydrates and protein with rice, lentils and vegetables all in one casserole. My friend over time has also evolved her Bisi Bele Baath to substitute rice with Quinoa, cracked Wheat and steel cut Oats, which makes it quite a protein heavy meal.
You can eat this entrée with a side of raita and papadams.
