When we travel to new places, we make sure we not only see all the things the place offers, but also try to live their culture, enjoy the specialties of the place and experience things.

Hence in Hawaii, we enjoyed the beaches, climbed the volcanoes, watched the whales, watched the sunrises and sunsets, submarined under water, watched the Luau, learnt the hula, learnt to surf on the waves,… But we also tried the local food and specialties.

Matsumuto Shave Ice and Giovani shrimp truck were some of the “Must Do’s” besides drinking tender coconut, drinking sugar cane juice, eating coconut candy , macadamia nuts, guava jelly, passion fruits  and more….

In our day trip to   Honolulu in Oahu Island, we covered all the ‘Must do’s’ of Honolulu, thanks to our local cousins. Seeing a place from a local perspective makes one enjoy it more rather than as a tourist.

Giovanni’s is a popular shrimp truck covered in graffiti parked on the Kamehameha Highway in Kahuku on the drive to North Shores. Its name to fame is, it was featured on Food Network on the $40 a day with Rachel Ray show; it’s well-known as the oldest shrimp truck in town; besides making some really mouthwatering and scrumptious shrimps.

Giovanni offers on its menu- the hot and spicy shrimp, the shrimp scampi and the lemon butter shrimp. They have half plates served with 6 large shrimp served with sticky rice or full plates served with a dozen shrimp with two scoops of rice.
We tried the shrimp scampi being told its Giovanni Best rated dish. But since we wanted it hot, we took the hot sauce too on the side. The humongous large shrimp which are marinated in olive oil, chopped garlic, and lemon butter are sautéed and served with the shell which we have to peel before eating.  We enjoyed the garlicky appetizing fare sitting on the picnic tables under the tents.
Coincidently we also saw the shrimp farms where these large shrimp are grown not far from Giovanni’s on the drive to north shore.
