Yesterday I visited the Urban Roots Farm as the carpool mom who was picking up a bunch of kids from their field trip to the farm. Before this day I was oblivious of the great community service organizations like these do to serve the local community.

Urban Roots  is a program of Youth Launch, an Austin based non-profit organization. The programs mission of Urban Roots is: “Youth development program that uses sustainable agriculture as means to transform the lives of young people as they increase the access of healthy food in Austin.”

Urban Roots empowers youth to grow produce for people in need; Serve the community by donating produce to food pantries and soup kitchens and selling affordable organic products.

Check out their website for more details on the unique service it provides by growing land, leaders and community!

The kids who went to the field trip not only  learnt about  the basics of farming, they helped weed a little and understand the service this farm offers to the community, besides drawing inspiration from the farm, for their  literary art! The field trip was fromBadgerdog’s creative writing camp. Interstingly Badgerdog is also a non-profit with a service agenda to build literary communities.
