Every spring my enthusiasm for gardening increases with watching beautiful colors of spring, new budding leaves, colorful hues of flowers and joys of fruit formation.
Last year my adventure in gardening was building my own raised vegetable garden containers. It was a great adventure and investment and since then we have reaped a good crop and hope for the same in the following years.
This year my new adventure in creating a miniature garden started when I stumbled on a perfect terrarium bowl. The bowl lead to my research about terrariums which led to the making of a terrarium.
Readymade Terrariums are pretty expensive, but with creativity and enthusiasm one can make this possible at home on a low budget.
How to make a ‘Terrarium’
- Get a Terrarium bowl or even a round glass bowl like a fish bowl is a workable solution.
- Make a layer of pebbles on the base of the container.
- Add some charcoal to absorb water and avoid stagnation.
- Layer an inch of sphagnum moss.
- Next add a layer of potting soil or any medium to plant the plants.
- Plant some miniature plants like succulents, ferns, crotons, etc which can add texture, color and visual interest. And most importantly, plants which have the ability to grow with minimum moisture and hardy enough to live in a small environment.
- When planting the plants in a small bowl with a small opening one also needs nimble fingers and chopsticks!
- The best way to water these plants is by misting them. This avoids excessive watering and rotting of the garden.
Storm in a teacup is an exaggeration….. but yes a garden in a bowl is possible 😉
