Last year I hardly ate any of the fruit from my peach and nectarine trees. Reason: they got harvested by the squirrels before I had a chance to do it. This year I have a Plan of action 😉
This year being forewarned by past experience, and constantly aware of squirrels harvesting on my neighbors loquat tree. I planned to protect my fruit trees from being harvested by wildlife. I researched books, online and talked with friends. My plan of action may or may not work 100 % . I will just have to wait and watch till the fruit ripens. But it’s worth making an effort and share the tips to save your fruit. Of course if a few fruits are eaten by the squirrels, it OK – like my little one said the squirrels need to eat fruit too;)
Here are few tips to protect your trees from wildlife!
- Make holes in small aluminum pie plates and tie them with a twine to branches of your fruit trees. The clanging and the shiny reflection is said to frighten the squirrels from climbing on the tree for fruit.
- Hang old cds from a twine on branches, the shiny rays and flashes of light reflecting apparently scare the birds from harvesting on your fruit.
- Hang ivory soap or any deodorant soap wrapped in a netting or mesh bags to protect your shrubs and trees from hungry deer. The smell of deodorant is apparently disliked by deer. Replace the soap once a month or till the soap retains the deodorant smell.
