We already are aware that saturated fats, processed foods, processed meats, fried food, high levels of dairy products, chocolates and sugar, – are not good for one’s physical health. But now research shows that this kind of food can be mentally injurious too!
Research conducted at University College London measured the risk of depression increased by 58 per cent in participants who ate mostly processed food; while participants who ate mostly healthy whole food were found to be 26 per cent less prone to depression.
There are many of us who are aware that health disorders like coronary heart disease and inflammation can be caused due to bad diets. But we ignore this cautionary wisdom for the convenience the processed food offers and of course for the taste.
But if we realize that this food may also onset depression and mental disorder, we may be more motivated to eat a better diet. A diet which involves eating more fruit, vegetables and fish, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, minerals, proteins, and antioxidants, which are good for the body and mind.
If changing ones’ lifestyle and eating patterns and following a healthier diet is difficult, start by little steps. And remember health is wealth 😉
