Hawaiian passion for snow is for snow cones or shaved ice. We have heard of the Obama’s eating snow cones on their Hawaiian vacation trips, but didn’t realize how popular they were in this island till we saw that snow cone stores and trucks were a common sight.
On our trip to Honolulu, our local cousins had planned an amazing day for us. They had scheduled all the best things to see and do in Honolulu in our short trip. Driving to north shores and Eating Snow cones at Matsumuto was one of the must-do’s.
I had never been a snow cone person unlike my family, but eating at Matsumuto, I realized what snow cones should actually taste like! Yes Snow cones here actually have a great taste and flavor not just color unlike snow cones eaten earlier.
The waiting line to get a Matsumuto snow cone was longer than any queue’s I have seen. Matsumuto is supposedly one of the famous snow cone store which attracts tourists, locals and celebrities alike. It’s so well known that it sell T-Shirts and shot glasses and cups with its name. It also has a coin machine which trademarks Pennys with matsumoto snowcones for a quarter!
Matsumuto offered various flavors of snow cones- Strawberry, Pineapple, Lemon, Coconut, Banana, Vanilla, Root Beer, Grape, Lime, Lilikoi (Passion fruit), s Orange, Honeydew, Melon, Mango, Raspberry, Watermelon, Bubblegum, Cotton Candy, Pinacolada, Banana Cream, Lihing Mui, Lychee, Cherry, Green Apple, Guava, Tangerine, Green tea, Fruits Punch, Melona, Peach, Creamsicle, Strawberry Cream, Coconut Cream and Mizore.
It also offered combinations like The Rainbow: Strawberry, Pineapple and Lemon; Hawaiian Special: Pineapple, Coconut and Banana; Matsumoto’s: Coconut, Pineapple and Lemon; but one also had an option of creating your own combination with 3 choices. Further accessories of vanilla ice cream, azuki beans and condensed milk could also be added.
Azuki Beans are red beans from Far East which were boiled and sweetened and added to the base of shaved ice as an option.
We had our snow cones with vanilla ice cream and it was delicious. The best part of the snow cones was we were enjoying all exotic fruit flavors of Hawaii all in one snow cone!
