Red salsa, Green salsa, Yellow salsa, Pink salsa, Orange salsa, Purple salsa, the many colors of salsa, hot, sweet, and hot,hot,hot….. There was a galore of salsas to taste and judge at the Faraday Kitchen Store’s Salsa contest.
Faraday’s Kitchen Store is an exclusive kitchen store of Cookware, Bakeware, Cutlery, and Kitchen Gadgets in Lakeway, Austin. With a motto of “feeding your passion for cooking”, the owners Tony & Melissa Curtis-Wellings and manager Sharon O’Quinn make one’s visit to their store an enriching experience.
In accord with their motto- feeding your passion for cooking, Faraday’s encourages the experts, the amateurs and the enthusiasts of cooking to take part in food contests every year. This was the second annual salsa contest part of the Faradays Foodie Palooza celebrations. The contest had 3 categories; red salsa, green salsa and the specialty salsas. The salsas were judged for flavor, texture and originality. There were individual category prizes, and one overall winner among the category winners, and the people’s choice award.
Salsa is a mix or medley of fresh ingredients, either fruit or vegetables in raw form making a refreshing and delicious fusion. I entered two entries, one in the green salsa category- “green envy- green peppers salsa” and one in the specialty salsa category- “SSSunshine pineapple-orange salsa”.
Last year there were many more Red salsa categories compared to the Green and Specialty, but this year there were many enthusiasts in all categories. The flavors of salsa’s were as interesting as their names. The Robert Whiteside’s Red salsa stood out in comparison to the other red salsas hence won in that category. The Green salsa’s had interesting names like ‘green envy’, ‘boogers on fire’, etc but the avocado y tomatillo salsa by Roberto Chavez won in this category. The speciality salsas had a lot of competition with Alecia Ojeda’s sweet fruit salsa and my Pineapple Orange Sunshine Salsa running hot! But there were other interesting ones in this category like the watermelon salsa and Man-Go salsa etc . Alecia won in the speciality category but finally the people verdict came to my Sunshine Pineapple- Orange salsa for peoples choice.
It was a great afternoon of hanging out with food enthusiasts tasting and enjoying the salsa’s celebrating with the folks at Faradays Kitchen Store.
