It’s like heaven, when you take a bite of the crispy and fluffy deep fried square piece of dough covered with abundance of powdered sugar 😉 This is the Beignet. And this taste of heaven is only experienced at café du monde.
During the spring, we visited this colorful city of New Orleans and enjoyed our trip thoroughly. Besides visiting a close friend, we enjoyed a parade in the French quarter with Mardi Gras beads et all, strolled and shopped and watched street shows and of course ate all the New Orleans food specialties of Beignets, Muffulettas, Po’ boys, oyster and shrimp sandwiches, Pralines, Praline candy, Tabasco sauces and more….
Café Du monde is a historic landmark of New Orleans and a must visit destination of New Orleans. Many years ago when we were celebrating New Years at New Orleans, we had eaten the heavenly beignets of café du monde and this was our second time. Café Du monde has been around since 1862 and is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Imagine how many pieces of heaven it’s created these past years 😉
Its not easy to taste this piece of heaven though 😉 ….. one needs abundance amount of ‘Patience’. Yes since the waiting lines to get into this restaurant are amazingly long. And after you actually get seated in the restaurant, the time for the exhausted wait staff to clean your table and take your order takes more time. And finally more waiting for the beignet and coffee to arrive after you give your order…. But it’s totally worth it 😉
While we were waiting we had watched street shows, heard some street musicians, and also watched the making process of beignets in their kitchen. The wait is very long but these beignets are worth this wait. But I wish café du monde could improve this situation to make the whole dining experience delightful 😉
The beignets which come in orders of three are not expensive and can be eaten in plenty to fulfill your cravings. They go perfectly well with their fresh flavorful coffee with chicory. It’s one of the best coffees we have tasted; hence we ordered a bunch of coffee cans to take home too. Besides this I couldn’t resist the Beignet mix and ordered the box to try out the beignets at home… Will have to see if I can replicate heaven at home!

Notes from Cafe Du Monde:
Beignets were also brought to Louisiana by the Acadians. These were fried fritters, sometimes filled with fruit. Today, the beignet is a square piece of dough, fried and covered with powdered sugar. They are served in orders of three.
Coffee first came to North America by way of New Orleans back in the mid-1700’s. It was successfully cultivated in Martinique about 1720, and the French brought coffee with them as they began to settle new colonies along the Mississippi.

The taste for coffee and chicory was developed by the French during their civil war. Coffee was scarce during those times, and they found that chicory added body and flavor to the brew. The Acadians from Nova Scotia brought this taste and many other french customs (heritage) to Louisiana. Chicory is the root of the endive plant. Endive is a type of lettuce. The root of the plant is roasted and ground. It is added to the coffee to soften the bitter edge of the dark roasted coffee. It adds an almost chocolate flavor to the Cafe Au Lait served at Cafe Du Monde.
