One afternoon after India’s victory in a world cup cricket match we decided the best way to celebrate would be to go eat some Indian food! Since Hot Breads was one on the new Indian restaurants in Austin we decided to check it out.
Hot breads bakery and café is a franchise in various cities of the US and the Austin franchise is located near Anderson Mill and highway 183 which is a very convenient location. The bakery has a lot of bakery items and snacks but also has a kitchen which caters to orders from the menu. The Bakery snacks are pretty good but menu orders from the kitchen are not consistently good!
Since today was an impromptu lunch in the middle of a weekday we decided to keep it quick and simple and ordered items like ‘Bhelpuri’, ‘Chana Bhatura’, ‘Masala Dosa’, ‘Mysore Masala Dosa’, and ‘Chicken 65’ etc. While the Bhelpuri and Chana Bhatura were decent and one of the good things on the menu, the ‘Mysore Masala Dosa’ which is most people’s favorite in any Indian restaurant was not appealing. It had a coriander powder paste instead of the popular lentil chatni paste inside the dosa besides the potato filling! This coriander powder paste on the inside of the dosa made it less appetizing. The ‘sambar’ which accompanied the dosa was not up to mark either. Another item which needed more work on was the ‘Chicken 65’, which surely needed more cooking.
Before we left we ordered some bakery items like the cashew cookies, pistachio cookies and ‘Naan Khatai’. These cookies were excellent and reminded us of the freshly made Indian bakery cookies we often ate in India.
The location is convenient, the ambience decent, service was relatively quick. If this place gets consistent in taste and improves its cooking skills, it can be a decent restaurant to check out. Otherwise bakery, snacks and pastries are pretty good.
