Let me start by saying I don’t believe in dieting for weight loss. I believe dieting is temporary and will bring back all your weight or more unless you make a lifestyle change forever! Hence I have never been on a diet before.
But having been highly recommended by a friend about this detox diet aka ‘GM diet’*, which not only detoxifies your system but also reduces few pounds, I got interested.
I talked my plan out with another friend who agreed to do the diet with me. It’s a good idea to do it with a friend to support each other and share notes with each other during the progress of the diet. To add further support, my spouse also joined the diet and the adventure follows.
*Though the diet is called GM diet, and supposedly created by General Motors for its employees and families. It was never endorsed by General Motors at all and categorically denied as a diet created by them.
Disclaimer: I am following this diet with my personal responsibility and cannot vouch for guarantees and weight loss or side effects if any.
The seven day Detox diet has its vegetarian and non vegetarian variants to be open to all.
Day One: All fruits except bananas. Watermelons and cantaloupes are highly recommended.
Day Two: All vegetables. Raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. For your complex carbohydrate, it’s recommended to start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast.
Day Three: A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas and no potatoes today.
Day Four: Bananas and milk. As many as eight bananas and three glasses of milk. Wonder soup* may be eaten in limited quantities throughout the day.
Day Five: Feast day. You can eat lean beef and 6 tomatoes. Increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.
Vegetarian variant for Day 5: You can eat one cup of rice and six whole tomatoes. Drink twelve glasses of water.
Day Six: Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables.
Vegetarian variant -Day 6: Vegetables day. You must eat 1 cup of rice and eat cooked or uncooked vegetables.
Day Seven: Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and vegetables.
*Wonder Soup
The following soup is intended as a supplement to your diet. It can be eaten any time of the day.
The main ingredients of this wonder soup are :
Onions, Green Peppers, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Celery, water, flavorings, herbs.
You may substitute the above vegetables according to your taste. Asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Avoid beans like lima, pinto, kidney, etc.
You can use 1 spoon of oil to sauté the vegetables and cook with water and herbs and flavorings of your taste.
Do’s and Don’ts of the Diet:
- Drink 10 glasses of water
- You can drink herbal tea/black tea / black coffee, with no cream or sugar.
- Don’t repeat this diet with out an interval of few days.
- No alcohol ( I dont have to worry about this since I dont drink at all 😉 )
- Moderate Exercise
Before my First Day:
The evening before we started the diet me and my friend printed out the list of required vegetables for the soup and list of recommend fruits and vegetables and went to the grocery store together. Shopping together with the lists already made us excited about the seven day adventure ahead.
My First day :
Early morning before I ate or drank anything, I weighed myself.
Since any diet is not complete with out exercise, we did our regular early morning walk too.
For Breakfast I ate Cantaloupe and Papaya
Lunch I ate Watermelon, Grapes, Mango, Pineapple.
And finally Dinner again I ate Watermelon, Mango, Grapes and Cherries.
And of course drank a lot of water throughout the day.
During the end of the day I had started feeling light headed with minor head ache. Headaches tend to happen if one is dehydrated; hence I tried to drink as much water as possible. The fruits especially cantaloupe and watermelon are diuretic; hence restroom trips were more than normal.
While I was on a diet and ate only fruits and cooked the wonder soup for the next 6 days, my kids were on a cooking adventure themselves. They were making yummy noodles, pasta carbonera etc and snacks for themselves which smelled enticing. But my determination was strong enough to ignore. But sometime in the evening I started feeling the urge for something spicy instead of fruit; then I had to distract myself or call and swap support from the friend on diet 😉
That was first day, my adventures through second day goes on….
