I decided I will have to create a category called new food find, since I keep discovering new and interesting vegetables, fruits or foods every so often which are not known or uncommon or unique!
Well, yesterday when I strolled in to a farmers market in our neighbourhood, ( yes, isn’t it a boon that we can get fresh organic produce and food at practically our doorsteps in America!) I saw a purple Okra! This color of okra surprised me and I asked more details from the vendor- Brenda. She and her husband got these okras from a farm in Pennington, Texas and were selling it here in Austin. The vendor said the taste of this okra is exactly like the green okra and even though it looks purple, when cooked the color turns green!
Well in spite of this piqued interest I didn’t buy this batch of purple okras because I have green okras growing in my backyard and didn’t want to buy more of the same family! But if any of you have eaten a purple okra do write back and inform how it tastes!
Okra by the way is an excellent vegetable for health. It is a great source of vitamins- A, B6,C, calcium, Iron, Riboflavin, Thiamin, Zinc and high in fiber and low in calories!
